Nissan investigates Leaf battery complaints

GasBuddy Blog -- Slowly developing consumer interest in electric vehicles has been attributed, primarily, to two obstacles; sticker shock and apprehension over limited mileage and battery range.

Nissan Motor Co now plans an independent investigation prompted by a small group of Leaf owners who believe their batteries are aging too fast, according to Lindsay Chappell of Automotive News.

The good news here is that Nissan is being proactive; it did not wait for NHTSA to intercede or ask for a recall. Instead it launched an investigation with an independent third-party. Former GM marketing manager Chelsea Sexton has agreed to form a worldwide group to investigate the problem independently of Nissan.

isn't one of the more driving (higher mileage) for less expense the purpose of purchasing an electric or hybrid vehicle? shouldn't the developers understand this? the first electric (battery powered) vehicle was developed almost 200 years ago. /now/shows/223/electric-car-timeline.html when will some real progress be made?

Nice to read about a company taking a pro-active approach. They seem concerned and are investigating the complaints and taking the buyers concerns seriously.

Besides High Mileage... it makes you wonder if the Owners of the High Milages Leafs may have been using "unconventional" Charging/Maintenance Practices too. (Charging too much, Not enough, under poor power conditions... which may have created/caused damage to the Charger and/or Battery Pack.)

Will be interested in hearing the results of the Investigation. Regardless of how a vehicle is powered... if you own the same model (or are considering one) you want to know what the best practices are in keeping it running at Peak condition.

If you ever see a leaf in a head on collision with a Tractor Trailer you will know where it got its name the leaf.... These batteries are not good safe items and that is putting it nicely.

Battery power is too limited yet. Everyone who has owned a laptop knows that you can count on a lithium battery about 3 years. Why would one in a car be any different. This shouldn't be a big shock. Not to mention that you can't get distance in mileage out of them. Most vehicles are designed to get you about 400 miles on a tank of gas. EV's can't come close unless you are driving in a gocart.

Hey DABEE1073: When an American company makes a vehicle that actually performs as advertized and is set at a competitive price, I will.

You want to drive the most "made in America" car on the market today (and for the past 3 years)? Get a Toyota Corolla.

My 1991 Toyota Hilux has over 250k on the dial (only half of it was on paved roads) and it's still running strong. Starts every time, and has NO body rust...

This is a definite issue with the EVs. When researching this I found this issue and upon investigation, I also found that the replacement battery runs any where from $3000 to $5000, depending on which hybrid you get. This deterred me from considering a hybrid when I was in the market.
