Single District speed camera: 116,734 tickets worth $11.6 million

Washington Post -- If you lined them all up head to toe, they would stretch from the White House to south of Richmond.

They could fill every seat in FedEx Field and Verizon Center and still leave people out in the cold.

That’s how many people got a traffic ticket from a single speed camera on New York Avenue in 23 months.

Tickets issued: 116,734.

Fines levied: $11.6 million.

City sympathy for angry drivers: zero.

“We believe we have made an impact,” said Gwendolyn Crump, spokeswoman for the D.C. police. “There have been 16 fatalities in 2012, compared to 28 at this time last year, for a 43 percent reduction of traffic fatalities. There is great value in slowing drivers down not only for their own safety, but also for safety of all other traveling parties.”

Not sure whether the 28 to 16 fatalities are just on New York Avenue? But anything to make New York Ave safer and speeds slower is OK with me. It's a terrible road.

Single District speed camera: 116,734 tickets worth $11.6 million, what a great location for a traffic camera. Think of all that money generated for the city, what a gold mine this camera is!
If you speed, you pay the fine! Big Brother and Sneeky is watching!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

"... don't speed ..." Anyone who says that is living in fantasyland.
You can't drive safely with your eyes constantly on the speedometer.
Learned that when I was 18.

I recently had a harrowing experience on a dark and busy highway with a state trooper in the mix. Do I watch my speed and cause road rage, or run over the children on the side of the road?
Difficult question.

Driving a bit faster than some arbitrary speed limit does not make me a bad person.

DiannaFan:
The problem with red light cameras is that they can't take into account what was happening prior to the alleged violation. It may be safer to go through a red light than to have an accident. An officer could at least be questioned about that. You can't cross-examine a machine. And we also assume that the machine is working correctly.

For $11+ million in fines you can hire a few more cops. No excuse DC.

SPEED CAMERA not RED LIGHT CAMERAS...

Do you think they load stamps in to the camera, so the camera can mail out the tickets??? Maybe the camera calls FedEx for a pickup of the tickets???
The camera has everyones address on file,right...

Easy way to beat the speed cameras! Download software for TOMTOM GPS. When in range the alert sounds and Icon flashes RED. It's better than a ticket fine or stick in the eye....;)

Did you teach your kids/grandkids how to beat the speed cameras???

I've heard that auto insurers invested heavily in cameras; the more tickets their policy-holders get, the higher the rates they can charge. Los Angeles (City) abolished the cameras last year. Although the County still maintains them at rail and busway crossings, and other cities (Beverly Hills among them) still use red-light cameras.

You know as well as I do that the concern for fatalities is not the primary motivation. That $11.6M certainly is.

Cameras in my area have been shut down. They're not accurate. One busted a mayor. Funny how they started to disappear after that.

In other jurisdictions, it's been shown that speed cameras have no effect on fatalities. In fact, in some places they've actually CAUSED accidents as drivers suddenly slam on the brakes when they see a camera.

This just shows that the real reason is revenue.

Cameras are a money grab for governments. When a cop stops you, it sinks in more profoundly than getting a ticket in the mail a month later. Some people have received tickets several days in a row from photo radar and didn't know they were penalized for a month so it did not slow them down that day like when the police stop you. Then you get states like Texas who encourage drivers to drive at 85 mph on certain highways and that is contradictory.

I'm noticing more and more people have the NASCAR syndrome.
And the way they drive it is inconceivable that they are getting good gas mileage.

Something is bad wrong if those numbers are correct. Either the camera is on short timer or that intersection is very poorly designed and managed. Either way, there has got to be a better way to handle the situation. We have to stop electing lazy and or corrupt politicians in the country.
